Brene Brown on Emotional Literacy
Ok, I might have a small obsession with Brene Brown. What’s not to love? She is fun, honest and has done the research! Also, she consistently invites really wonderful guests on her podcast, there are so many fabulous episodes! I encourage you to check them all out, they are extremely helpful. I would like to point to the Permission to Feel episode, which really delves into the advantages of emotional literacy. What is emotional literacy? Well, it is basically the ability to define and categorize emotions and feelings in a very nuanced way. The more awareness and scope a person has in identifying emotions, the more latitude they have in regulating their responses to those emotions. This is the sort of work that can be achieved through counseling, and in a lot of ways, it is at the core of the counseling process. Awareness. Awareness of our emotions, our thoughts, our feelings and our body. I have provided a link to this specific episode (click on title of post), but there are also excellent episodes on race and social justice, that I would highly recommend.
